Origins

The Origins of NOVAS

NOVAS established its first service in Ireland in 2002; an accommodation service for men and women experiencing homelessness, without barriers to entry. This service was located in St. John’s Square in Limerick City.

From the outset, NOVAS offered an alternative to the existing abstinence and curfew-based approaches, focusing on promoting a sense of safety among clients through single room accommodation and the provision of care and support without judgement.

The Founder

NOVAS’ approach was informed by previously homeless man Joe McGarry. Joe brought his lived experience of homelessness to the organisation which enabled NOVAS to develop services that promoted the values of harm-reduction, dignity, diversity and non-judgement. Recognising the strength and experience of the people NOVAS has underpinned organisational development and growth ever since.
